The Lubicon People are preparing to follow through on illegitimate oil development activities in their unceded, traditional lands, as announced in a letter by Chief Bernard Ominayak to Prime Minister Mulroney (see web.native: OMINAYAK TO MULRONEY and pn.alerts: LUBICON SET 1. DEC. DEADLINE). Like last year, when the Lubicon People asserted jurisdiction over their own traditional lands, politicians and bureaucrats are warning the Lubicons and their supporters NOT to break Canadian laws. Those are the same laws that are used to justify the destruction of Aboriginal lands across Canada. Those are also the very laws created to justify the piecemeal destruction of Aboriginal societies like the Lubicons or the Innu. These very laws also make it possible for an investigator of the Intelligence Unit of the National Crime Intelligence Services to visit Lubicon supporters in their homes to question them. Aided by members of local police forces, this exercise is a blatant attempt to harass and intimidate supporters. The purpose, as explained, is to make supporters aware that large crowds could incite violence. One supporter pointed out to the Intelligence Unit investigator that she experienced exactly that last year when, after several days of peaceful Assertion of Jurisdiction over Lubicon Lands, a large crowd of Royal Canadian Mounted Police, supported by helicopters, attack dogs, and SWAT team members with silenced sub-machine guns raided passport check points and arrested 27 Lubicons and their supporters. The purpose of visiting also seems to have a much darker side. Last years public opinion clearly was behind the Lubicons and the intent this time could very well be an attempt to arrest people before the Dec. 1 deadline on CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY charges if need be. Stay tuned as we will try to keep you up-to-date on the latest developments. If you want to do more than get information start writing letters to Canadian politicians and newspapers. Public opinion is the politicians barometer and letters enormously powerful. Please send copies of letters to the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation, c/o 3536-106 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, T6J 1A4.
